42th Tea Pots and Tea Things Tuesdays, McKelvie's

42nd   Tea Pot and Tea Things Tuesday

A real friend is one who helps us to think
our best thoughts, do our noblest deeds,
and be our finest selves.

“It is who we are in our thoughts, feelings, dispositions, and choices—in the inner life—that counts. Profound transformation there is the only thing that can definitively conquer outward evil.”

-- Dallas Willard, philosopher

Welcome dear friends, new and familiar, to a cozy corner of comfort and conversation with a cup of tea.  Did you feel loved this week around the tea table? I did. Thank you to everyone who shared their special post and those who took the time to comment. I visited each and every one.   I have discovered that my relationship (connection)? with you through  thought-provoking prose, your favorite scripture,  innovative projects and creative photography, encourage my personal journey in a positive manner.

Do you have time to linger by the fire?  I have soup simmering in the pot and fresh bread baking in the oven. Last month I served Bean and Barley Soup   and promised a recipe for McKelvie's Bannack bread or Soda bread.  Sorry for the delay but I have included that recipe below, as well a Creamy Broccilli White Bean Soup.

Simplicity was so appealing to me this week.
I used only black and white dishes and plain-jane one's at that!
A combination of five different sets
All thrifted or on sale.

A touch of spring green to accent.
After a busy week of Valentine's events this seemed restful.

A place for you

 A place for me.
Shell dish is sitting on a teacup for height.
Butter and sharp cheddar cheese will be served.

Enjoy!

I had a little extra time during the week and got creative with last week's vignette.
I posted the extra pictures Sunday.  See them here

“The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’

-- Jesus

Creamy Broccilli White Bean Soup

Steaming broccoli florets helps them maintain their nutrients; adding them to soup with olive oil, pine nuts, and garlic cloves makes a complete hearty meal. Serves 4

Ingredients

1 head broccoli (1 pound), cut into florets, stems thinly sliced

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 yellow onion, diced

2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

One 15-ounce can cannellini beans, drained

2 1/2 cups chicken stock

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 tablespoon pine nuts, toasted

1/2 ounce shaved Parmesan, for serving

Directions

1.  Steam broccoli florets and stems until tender and bright green, about 3 minutes. Let cool slightly. Reserve 1/2 cup florets for garnish.

2.  Heat oil in a medium pot over medium heat. Saute onion and garlic until translucent, about 6 minutes. Add beans and stock and bring mixture to a simmer. Remove from heat and add broccoli; puree in batches in a blender until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish each bowl with broccoli florets, toasted pine nuts, and shaved Parmesan.

Scottish or Irish?????

McKelvie's Delishes Fishes Dishes is a wonderful restaurant in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Over 100 years ago, Mckelvie's used to be an old fire hall that was destine for the wrecking crew. After undergoing some serious remodeling, this restaurant is now high-ceilinged and decorated with great marine artifacts. Not to mention a rowboat in the center of the floor. When we lived there 25 years ago it was a favorite of our young family.  Every guest is greeted with a basket of their special soda bread and butter.  As I looked for a recipe for soda bread, the reference to McKelvie's was common. I am not the only one who wanted to take the recipe home. This recipe is so close to the real McCoy, er McKelvie you would have to go there to get better. (By the by...it is also very tastey with a before dinner glass of wine) source

Oat Bannock, McKelvie’s Style

Ingredients:

1 c Whole wheat flour
1/2c All purpose flour
1/2c Rolled oats
2 Tbsp. Sugar, granulated
2 tsp. Baking powder
1/2 tsp. Salt

1/3c Raisins; optional
3/4c Water; approximately

Stir together flours, oats, sugar, baking powder and salt.

Add melted butter, raisins (if using) and water, adding more water if needed to make sticky dough.

With floured hands, pat into greased pie plate.
